A Closer Look With…

Krista Abair— 1999 | Austin
Operations

A Closer Look With — KristaWhat’s your current role with Capitol Services? What was your first role with the company?
I am currently the Service Operations Initiatives Coordinator. Essentially, I coordinate new initiatives and products, process improvements, training, etc. My first role with Capitol Services was a part-time CSR in the Corporate department, back when I was in college. I rode my dinosaur to the office and then went to work faxing documents, typing things on the typewriter, and hand-writing FedEx air bills (all by candlelight).

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
I love spending a day visiting wineries out in the hill country, enjoying good food, and spending time with my husband and friends. (Knitting while binge-watching shows and snuggling with my furry sidekicks is pretty great, too.)

Do you have a favorite holiday? Why or why not?
I love any occasion that provides an opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. It is so fun to carry on existing traditions and create new ones.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?
We hope to go to England next year. My husband and I had a quick honeymoon in Sonoma County (California) after our wedding, but think of this UK trip as another honeymoon.

What was your favorite age growing up?
Growing up, I always thought that I would enjoy being an adult more than being a kid. You know what? I was right!

Was the last thing you read?
The last book that I read was Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. It has it all—science, cooking, true love, and a brilliant dog.

What was the last TV show you binge-watched?
The new season of Julia just dropped and I absolutely love it. I grew up watching Julia Child on PBS and I think it is a marvelous portrayal of her.

Are you into podcasts?
I am! My current go-to podcasts are We Can Do Hard Things (with Glennon Doyle, an author I like) and Check the Locks (true crime).

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Potatoes. They are a guilty pleasure of mine and you can do so much with them.

How old were you when you had your first celebrity crush, and who was it?
I believe that I was around ten and my crush was (cringe) Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block.

What’s one thing that can instantly make your day better?
My husband’s sense of humor. He can make me laugh like no one else and that just makes everything better.

What song always gets you out on the dance floor?
Dancing Queen by ABBA

Ideally, how would you spend your birthday?
It sounds a little wacky, but having a petting zoo would be really fun. I love animals and it is always fun to get to interact with them.

Have your ever disliked something and then changed your mind?
I really disliked sparkling water when I was younger. Then, one fateful day, I had a Topo Chico and my world was forever changed. Now, I am all about it.

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?
I love playing card games and dominoes with family. Our most recent favorite is a card game called Golf.

What makes you feel at peace?
Being in or around water makes me feel calm and, oddly enough, grounded. It can be the ocean, a lake, a river, or a swimming pool. I love them all.

What are you most proud of in the last year?
Planning a wedding that a few people proclaimed was their favorite wedding ever.  It was a lot of hard work, but also so much fun.

Do you live by any piece of advice or motto?
It is silly, but what immediately comes to mind is “don’t look for boogers.”  This was something my mom would tell me and is a great reminder to not look for negativity in life.  (That said, if I do see one, I will definitely tell you!)

If you see a puddle on the ground, do you walk around it or over it?
Usually around it. I am definitely not known for my long legs.

What’s your go-to midnight snack?
Microwave popcorn.  You might find a 44-count box of it from Costco in my pantry.

What do you love most about the internet?
I love the fact that I can answer any random question that I might have and then shift seamlessly into watching a cute animal video.
